Where is Senegal?


People & Culture
  • Principle ethnicities include: Wolof (36%), Fulani (26.5%), Sereer (16.5%), Diola (9%), and Mandinka (6.5%).
  • Islam: 90% of the population is Islamic. Sufism is the type of Islam practiced in Senegal. Its teachings are based on an ancient form of Islamic mysticism.
  • Christianity: 5% of the population is Christian, primarily catholic. 
  • Animism: Some people still follow traditional beliefs. Animism has also had a huge influence on Islam and Christianity in the country.
  • Tropical, hot, and humid. The rainy season is from December through April and the dry season is from May through November.
  • Average temperature is about 75°F.
  • Most of the landscape consists of dry, arid plains.

Religion
Senegal takes pride in its religious tolerance, so much so that the government officially celebrates both Islamic and catholic holidays.
